Great question! In the world of offset printing - not a delicate nor passionate world - volume is everything. The higher the volume of books printed, the lower the cost per book. Making micro-batch, artisanal custom print runs on large offset printing machines (needed in order to deliver the best possible covers, choice of paper, selective font, etc.) will inevitably result in higher costs per book. The cost of boxing the volumes together adds yet another hurdle.
